Google has had a fairly intense year in 2023 when it comes to ensuring that the security of Chrome users remains at a good level. What version of Chrome should you have?
There are two update numbers that are divided by the different versions available of the Google browser. For now, the only platform that has not received this emergency update is Android Stable, but seeing as it is already available in Android Early Stable, it should be a matter of time. Aside from this, take note that the version you must have in Windows is the following: 116.0.5845.187 or 116.0.5845.188. In the case of using Chrome Extended Stable for Windows, the version will be the second of those we have indicated.
Mac or Linux users will have the 116.0.5845.187 update as the latest available, and the same will happen for those of Chrome Extended Stable for Mac. Therefore, all you have to do is update and take a look where it says Version of Chrome to see if you have already avoided possible problems. If you haven’t updated in a while, don’t be scared if, before restarting, you see that the version indicated is an old one. When you restart, Chrome will update to the latest version available.
Returning to the security issue at hand, this It was discovered on September 6 in combination by The Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto and experts from Apple’s SEAR team. They quickly informed Google of what they had found and the company began working on this patch, which is now available. What they discovered is that there was a vulnerability with the WebP image format.
This format is increasingly used in web format because it reduces the weight of the images compared to the extensions that were previously used. Its efficient optimization system surpasses even that of JPEG, which is why it is receiving a lot of support around the world. Unfortunately, the vulnerability of this format had put millions of users at risk under circumstances that could have been as simple as entering web pages where there were WebP images. Google did not want to delve into the exact risks that existed with this problem, but they are possibly very high due to the way in which it has worked on an emergency update.
Furthermore, Google has also not spoken about whether users of other Chromium-based browsers are at risk or not. But the specialists they think it is very likely.
