September 12, 2023 was not an ordinary day for Apple. In addition to having presented its very first iPhones equipped with USB-C ports, the firm was seen Call to order the same day in a press release from the ANFR (National Frequency Agency). The cause : the latter’s non-standard wave emissions.
Rumors denied by Apple
After this report, the Apple firm was ordered to remove the iPhone 12 from the market and find a fix. But rumors suggested that Apple was turning a deaf ear to this problem.
The Cupertino company subsequently denied the rumors and clarified that it had taken the ANFR press release seriously. Then she added that she was going quickly deploy an update in order to bring the iPhone 12 into compliance with French standards. The National Frequency Agency responded saying it would test the fix as soon as it was deployed. And it is now done, because the agency published a press release this morning to validate the fix.
Why the iPhone 12s were removed from the market
If the phones were immediately withdrawn from the market, it was for a very specific reason. When the ANFR carried out its usual tests measuring the wave emissions of the devices, it realized one thing. The feature that helps reduce emissions in the iPhone 12 was defective.
Indeed, iPhones, like many smartphones, have the ability to detect if a human body is near the phone. This thus makes it possible to reduce the waves produced by the latter. However, the director of the ANFR, Gilles Brégant, declared that: “ iPhone 12 does not always detect the immediate presence of the body “.
ANFR validates the fix
A few days ago, Apple deployed an update to correct the wave emissions of its smartphone model released in 2020. As promised, Gilles Brégant’s agency carried out tests to verify that everything is in compliance . These were conclusive, given that the SAR (Specific Wave Absorption Rate for the human body) was measured at 3.94 W/kgknowing that the European standard is 4 W/kg. During previous measurements, the ANFR had recorded 5.74 W/kg.
For the ban to be lifted, the patch must be provided to all iPhone 12 users.
