You get to the car, start it, connect your iPhone and prepare to enter Apple Car Play and enter a route, but then you realize that Google Maps it does not work. This happened to me recently when I wanted to enter the address back home after an important trip I had to make, and I had no choice but to use Apple Maps.
I didn’t want to waste time trying to figure it out because it wasn’t the time or the place, but when I got home I did start messing around. I discovered something very curious, that It’s a pretty common problem. and in most cases it is caused by a permissions problem. For all these reasons, I have been encouraged to write this article where I am going to share with you the solution to this problem based, precisely, on the three most common causes that usually cause it.
Identifying this problem is very easy, since although we can run Google Maps in Apple CarPlay Once this app reaches the home screen it will only show an empty background and navigation icon, and any attempt to enter directions will not work as we will simply receive an error message. As always, if after finishing reading you have any questions you can leave it in the comments and I will be happy to help you solve it. Without further ado, make yourself comfortable and let’s get started.
Google Maps not working on Apple Car Play: how to solve it
1.-Check the permissions
If you see that Google Maps is not working, this is the first thing you should do, since it is the fastest and simplest, and also the most effective. This application needs your location to function correctlysince it is what it uses to locate your position and search, from it, for the route you want to go.
It goes without saying that if you do not allow it to access your location, it will not be able to identify where you are, and therefore it will show that empty map and will be unable to search for destinations. To give Google Maps permission to access your location you just have to enter «Settings > Google Maps» and allow it to access your location. You have two options, “when using the application” and “always”. To avoid errors, I always allow you access.
In case you already had the option activated, deactivate it and activate it again.
2.-Close Google Maps and restart the iPhone
If the previous solution does not solve the problem, try closing the Google Maps application on your iPhone, in case it is open and running in the background. Too easy, you just have to do the short scroll up gesture and swipe the app up to close it.
You must do this with the iPhone disconnected from car. Once you’re done, and always making sure you’ve given the app the necessary permissions, you’ll need to reconnect it. Go into Apple Car Play and Google Maps should work. If not, try connecting it with Google Maps activated and the destination already searched on your iPhone.
3.-Reinstall the application
In case none of the above works, which certainly would not be normal, you have one last option, uninstall and reinstall Google Maps. When you have reinstalled it, make sure you give it permission to always use your location, not just when using the application, since I have been able to confirm cases in which Giving only limited permissions Google Maps does not work.
I hope I have helped you with these three steps. If none of them have worked for you I would update to the latest version of iOS available and I would apply the steps again to reinstall the application and give the necessary permission for the location. If this also does not solve the problem you should contact technical support directly. While you wait for a solution, turn to Apple Maps, which is, after all, a competent alternative.
