If Saturdays have become famous for something lately, it is because of the classic restrictions of Hoy No Circula Saturday, the special day within the program devised by the CDMX Environment Secretariat (SEDEMA).
Because? If you are still wondering that, it is likely that: 1) you are not affected by the environmental restrictions imposed in the 16 municipalities in Mexico City and in some suburban municipalities of the State of Mexico. In that case, you can find more information on the topic at this link. 2) You have just arrived in Mexico, you have heard something about this but you are still not clear what we are talking about.
Hoy No Circula is a project designed by and for the improvement of air quality wherever it is applied. In this way, the circulation of cars is restricted so that, with a lower volume of cars on the streets, the volume of polluting emissions present in the atmosphere is also lower.
All of this applies, as we say, in the 16 municipalities in Mexico City and in the following suburban municipalities of the State of Mexico:
- Atizapan of Zaragoza
- Coacalco de Berriozábal
- Cuautitlan
- Cuautitlán Izcalli
- Chalco
- Chicoloapan
- Chimalhuacan
- Ecatepec de Morelos
- Huixquilucan
- Ixtapaluca
- Peace
- Naucalpan de Juárez
- Nezahualcoyotl
- Nicolas Romero
- Tecámac
- Tlalnepantla de Baz
- Tultitlan
- Chalco Valley
What cars and license plates does Hoy No Circula Saturday affect?
Ok, once we are clear that we are talking about a program to reduce the pollution we have in our atmosphere… how does it work and how is it applied?
The most basic thing about Hoy No Circula is that we have to be clear that some cars cannot circulate between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.. These restrictions apply based on the car’s hologram and its license plate number. In the image above you have all the details.
Taking this into account, Saturdays are the days with special restrictions. Three situations can occur in them because, depending on the hologram and the license plate number, there are three types of vehicles:
- Those that can circulate every Saturday
- Those who have to rest every Saturday
- Those who rest every other Saturday
With all this in mind, the first thing we have to think about to know if Today Not Circula Saturday affects our car is to look, as we said, at the hologram.
If the hologram is 0 or 00, the car will be able to circulate freely and will not be affected by any type of restriction. In this case, every weekend, the car has free rein.
If the hologram is two, these cars will have to comply with traffic restrictions every week. There are no exceptions, if it’s Saturday and we have a car with hologram two, you will have to stay home.
And finally, if we are talking about a vehicle with a hologram one, we will have to look at its license plate number. If it ends in an odd number, you will have to rest on odd Saturdays of the current month. If it is even, the opposite. In this case, Saturday, September 28, we are on the fourth Saturday of the month of September and, therefore, cars with hologram two and an even license plate number will have to stay home.
Of course, we must keep in mind that there are some exceptions that allow the circulation of specific vehicles like any other day of the week. In this case, Hoy No Circula does not apply and, of course, neither does Hoy No Circula Saturday:
- Those with hologram 0 and 00
- Those that run on electricity, natural gas or are hybrids
- Those who have a disabled license plate
- All those dedicated to urban transportation services (includes funeral homes)
- Those that offer school or passenger transportation
- Those intended for public safety and/or civil protection
If you fail to comply with these restrictions, the fine will be 20 to 30 times the Unit of Measurement and Update (UMA), which is equivalent to 1,924.40 pesos and even 2,886.60 pesos.
