Reddit introduced a new feature that allows you to translate posts into eight different languages when viewing them through Reddit’s iOS or Android apps or on the web, even when logged out, according to a Reddit administrator. Initially, posts will be able to be translated into English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch and Swedish.
The button has been inserted at the top left according to the first testimonies, but the tool is not yet completely perfected and offers a partial translation. Here is a comment from The Verge, who was able to test it from the early stages.
I tested the feature by viewing this post on r/France. It’s in French, but when I connected from the web, I was able to translate it into English by clicking on the “Translate” link at the top left of the post. Even when I’m connected via the iOS app, I see the “Translate” link. Since I don’t speak French, I can’t judge the quality of Reddit’s translation. However, the translation of the post into English seems acceptable to me. However, it is likely that it is not possible to read fully translated threads at the moment:
Reddit said it has just started experimenting with the translation of comments under posts and only on iOS and Android. Full translation of posts and comments seems to be part of Reddit’s plan, as the admin writes that “soon, the entire conversation experience on Reddit will be multilingual!”.
The admin’s post also reminds users that Reddit is getting rid of its coin system. The last day they will operate is Tuesday September 12th and according to the admin Reddit has already removed the ability to award prizes about Reddit’s old design and the “mobile desktop experience” (which presumably refers to mobile browser web viewing). Reddit has promised that there will be some kind of rewards system in the futurebut has not shared any details so far.
