Guess: Anyone who hasn’t been confronted with it directly or even has a good memory won’t remember WiFi4EU, which we talked about already reported in 2017. I just stumbled upon this while browsing the archives of our blog.
WiFi4EU is/was one European Union initiativewhich aims to provide citizens across Europe with free Wi-Fi access in public spaces. This includes places such as parks, squares, public buildings, libraries and health centers.
The main goal of this initiative was to reduce the digital divide and increase access to quality internet services for all people. The EU provided vouchers worth 15,000 euros that communities could use to finance and install the necessary WiFi equipment.
Municipalities from across the EU were able to apply for these vouchers, with selection taking place on a first come, first served basis. In return, the communities agreed to cover the costs of internet connection and equipment maintenance for at least three years.
The years have passed and I haven’t been able to find any current funding guidelines. First of all, that means that the whole thing comes to a standstill, because expansion is not easily possible – not everyone gets into the project that easily. What is interesting, however, is that the EU states that there are now over 93,000 hotspots in the EU; free, ad-free and tracking-free.
There are now even official apps quietly and secretly for Android and iOS for WiFi4EU was launched. They show hotspots on a map, you can search in countries, navigate to hotspots and also report if they don’t work. Maybe it will help you someday.
