According to a report, Apple has started having its first chips manufactured at TSMC’s new US factory in Arizona instead of at TSMC Taiwan. The first product “Made in USA” is reportedly the Apple A16 Bionic SoC, which was used in the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) and later in the iPhone 15 (Plus).
N4P chips from Arizona
The process is said to be the same as that used for this chip in Taiwan: N4P. The volume is currently still small, but can already be described as significant. The yield is still below the level in Taiwan, but is quickly catching up. This is what the journalist reports Tim Culpan.
A16 Bionic Made in USA for the iPhone SE?
With Introducing the iPhone 16 (Pro) There are currently only two products in Apple’s portfolio that use the A16 Bionic: iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. However, it appears that the US version will not be used there.
Rather, Culpan speculates that the new iPhone SE expected for early 2025 could get this US chip with bonds from the iPhone 14.
TSMC invests $40 billion in Arizona
TSMC’s first location outside of Taiwan is the largest funding project under the US Chips Act. The investment volume locally is 40 billion US dollars. Two factories are planned on site. The chips come from the first fab designed for the N4 process. Mass production is scheduled to start in 2025. The second fab is being prepared for production start in 2026 – then with N3.
