The Day Before makers promise a new start with Escape Factory and improvement based on “Honesty, transparency and professionalism“. The new old studio wanted money for fan articles and on Kickstarter. After less than 24 hours, doubts about the sincerity of the venture are growing.
A lot of money overnight
15 supporters of the Kickstarter campaign and a contribution of 400 euros turned into 10,259 euros twelve hours later. However, this is not a massive success because only 30 people contributed to it. A look at the support levels confirms this. Only two people contributed almost 10,000 euros together, once through the “Leave-Your-Mark” bundle, which cost around 1,400 euros, and once around 8,400 euros for the “Meet-with-Fntastic “Founders” package. Around 3,730 euros are still missing to finance it.
The numbers continue to suggest minimal interest in Game and against successful funding, because most of the money is committed in the first few days of a campaign. The studio’s “reinvention” is not considered credible. The fact that a few people contribute a lot is also seen as a critical sign in the ComputerBase forum: it is an indication of possible manipulation of the campaign by the developers.
This is an understandable assumption given the history, but it is not the only possible reason. A meeting with the development team, which promises the most expensive supporter package, could be exploited in the media, especially for streamers: Fntastic and Day Before made significant waves and were a top topic for days. After the game stopped being sold, license keys for the title that had not yet been activated experienced a significant increase in value. Attention would therefore be guaranteed.
Asset flip accusation
There is also an accusation of an asset flip at Escape Factory. However, the corresponding thread in the Steam forum has been deleted. According to the compiled list, the basic structure of the game is probably not from the Unity Store. The fact that small studios in particular are buying content is nothing unusual in itself, the problem lies elsewhere and not just in the fact that Day Before was a compilation of standard assets.
Because the developers respond to the accusation in accordance with their new principles with “Honesty, transparency and professionalism“: According to its author, the post was presumably deleted by the developers, who have not yet responded to this accusation or other criticism or have only responded with the help of pre-formulated statements based on the statements in their own FAQ.
According to one Thread in the Steam forums The deletion of posts should also affect other criticism both on Valve’s platform and on the developers’ Discord. None of this is necessarily evidence of bad intentions, but even in the best case scenario the developers do not give a good impression. And after the day-before debacle, the conclusion is very obvious that essentially nothing has actually changed: The signs in this direction have quickly increased.
