OpenWrt is a Linux-based open source firmware for embedded devices, mostly routers. It was originally developed as an offshoot of Linksys’ official firmware, but offers a greater variety of features and advanced customization options compared to most standard router firmware. At the beginning of the year it announced that it wanted to bring its own hardware onto the market. In collaboration with Banana Pi and Mediatek, the product “OpenWrt One/AP-24.XY” was created, which has now gone on public sale.
The OpenWrt One specifications include:
- A MediaTek Filogic 820 SoC,
- MediaTek MT7976C Wi-Fi (6/6E),
- 1 GiB DDR4 DRAM,
- 256 MiB SPI NAND and 16 MiB SPI NOR flash memory,
- two Ethernet ports (2.5 GbE and 1 GbE),
- USB 2.0 (Type-A),
- a USB-C port for the console,
- M.2 slot for NVMe SSD,
- a button to switch between boot and recovery,
- an external watchdog,
- an RTC with battery backup and USB-PD 12V power supply via USB-C with the option of retrofitting PoE.
There will also be a mikroBUS slot for expansion and 3x MMCX antenna connectors. At The router currently costs around 99 euros on Aliexpress.
